Moved to New York City, 1968

A first-generation photorealist, Hilo Chen is best known for his Pop art-reminiscent paintings of female figures sunbathing on beaches or lounging by pools. His highly sexualized figures often appear topless or nude and in close-up views, with the texture of their skin rendered in meticulous detail. Despite his focus on the female body, Chen says of his paintings: “Color and space. That is what they are about. I work for every detail in the space and want to show the depth of the scene.”
